Transformation innovations

A major focus of the laboratory is on developing novel methods for stimulating the regeneration of transgenic plants using a variety of “developmental (DEV) genes” that directly stimulate cellular growth and meristem development. We are particularly interested in genes that can stimulate “in planta” (greenhouse-based) transformation as well as those helpful in vitro (aseptic growth media), with emphasis on poplars, eucalypts, and hops.

Accelerated development of transgenic shoots in poplar using DEV genes from Agrobacterium.
Figure: Accelerated development of transgenic shoots in poplar using DEV genes from Agrobacterium. The genes were used in an altruistic manner (cotransformation of DEV and marker genes). Shown are false-color images that show transgenic tissues based on hyperspectral imaging of green-fluorescent-protein expression.
